Laia Puppies First Mush!
The Laia puppies took to their mush like ducks to water, lapped it right up! Some literally just dove in! After they were done the Caramella puppies joined in on the clean up through the x-pen! Mommy Laia had lots to help clean up with, then supplying more snacks and then a pillow for a good snooze! | | 2:18 pm |
Caramella Puppies Playing 5 half weeks old
Here are some quick shots of the puppies playing. With having the other two litters in the puppy room I set up a play area in my living/reception room. Lots of room to run, actually too much room as they can escape out into the rest of the house or through the railing! They just love to explore and play! | | Sunday, May 20th, 2012 | | 11:26 pm |
Happy Birthday Melina Puppies!!!
Wow, this has been one busy weekend! Melina and her due dates were like a ping pong game and she finally decided she was going to ace us all and decide the time herself! When I did her ultra sound the vet thought the puppies' development were more 30 days not 37 days, so we moved her due date to May 29th. After I scheduled her X-Ray Date I went back and counted days again and counted 34 days for the ultra sound which moved it back to the 25th. I checked her tie dates against my chart and got May 23rd-25th. I figured that the 21st was probably cutting it close for her x-ray and debated on trying to get her in last minute on Friday but Friday was a pretty crowded day already with Reading with Doodles in the morning and my eye Dr app that afternoon and then any errands I needed to get caught up on. She was resting quietly, waddling every where but seemed content. Temperature was in the upper 99's. Saturday morning, 5 AM she woke me up and wanted outside. As I followed her around she kept trying to crawl under the bushes, the deck (we have shored up every possible opening) and under the boat ... So I took her back in and she started pacing and whining. I thought uh oh, so I quickly started getting things ready (Sunday's plans) and moved the Caramella puppies to their new puppy area and cleaned up that whelping box. Meanwhile Melina kept asking to go outside but all she wanted to do was dive in the bushes and make a den! I finished getting every thing ready to go. I was suppose to meet my best friend Janet that morning for our annual outing of the Farmer's Market and Lunch together. Her temperature was still in the 99's, she was restless, light panting, but no pushing or nesting so I figured I wasn't delivering puppies in the next 6 hours or so. The family said go, go, go. especially as I may be missing out on Bunco that night if my intuition was correct and we were going to be having puppies! I checked in a couple of times while I was gone and was told she was whining a bit but otherwise she was not acting like she was wanting to have her puppies. It was a nice day for the Farmer's Market and we had a very nice lunch. At 1:30 I checked in again and all was quiet and I thought about running a couple of quick errands but had this really funny feeling that I needed to be back so I headed home. My son was walking her in the yard when I got home and she was very happy to see me. I walked her around a bit more and brought her inside. She was doing some light panting but not much else. After a bit I saw some discharge and quickly we moved to the puppy room as it looked like we were going to start to have those puppies! Sure enough she went into labor and her panting picked up and we had our first puppy at 2:53 PM, a chocolate boy! My family all started joking that she was just waiting for me to come home! The next puppy was 37 minutes later, an apricot boy and the 3rd puppy 26 minutes after that, a little apricot girl. I had the family run and get my phone so I could text my friend to let them know I was not making Bunco. After that the next puppy was not for 49 minutes, a chocolate boy. While we waited for the next round we both got a dish of vanilla ice cream! Melina loves vanilla ice cream! She licked her's down quickly and so I gave her some of mine too! After that the puppies kept spacing out further and further and we didn't get done until the last one was born at 10:37. Since we didn't get the puppy x-ray done I didn't have a count of puppies. The ultra sound counted 6-7 puppies and usually you don't find them all. We sat up with her for awhile just in case there was another puppy thought I couldn't feel another one and I didn't hear anything with the stethoscope, but it wouldn't have been the first time she surprised me with a last puppy hours down the road. But that was it she was done. 7 beautiful puppies. 4 apricots, 3 chocolates. 5 boys and 2 girls. Caramella Puppies First Mush!
The puppies always love their first mush meal! Sometimes you have to dab a bit on their nose to get them going but they catch on quick and dive right in!! The pictures can also be viewed under the "Scrapbooking Option" | | Friday, May 4th, 2012 | | 7:50 pm |

Happy Birthday Laia Puppies This was probably one of my more eventful birthing of puppies. Around 4 PM on Friday I figured we were getting close as Laia was getting restless, panting and nesting. She also went and found one of her toys, this silly duck. She insisted that duck was staying with her in the whelping box. I tried to get her to trade for a brand new clean toy but no she wanted the duck! She would carry it around while she nested, licked it like a new baby, and cuddled with it while she was resting. I tried several times over the night to sneak it out and she would always find it and bring it back in!
By 7:30 PM one of the sacs broke and she started some pushing. This went one for several hours with her on and off pushing with some pushing hard in there. Finally I saw a little tail, knew the puppy was breach and was concerned the puppy was stuck with all the hard pushing going on. I figured I would give it only a bit more time, but after a couple of good pushes the puppy came out. He was a bit sluggish and I started rubbing him down to get the circulation going. Within minutes the next puppy popped out and only a minute later the 3rd puppy was born. I let Laia clean those two up while I dried the first puppy off and by the time she finished with those two he was up and moving around as much as his little sisters. First puppy was 9:34, second 9:42, and the third was 9:43. A boy, two girls, all chocolate.
After that things went smoothly with the next puppy being born at 10:54, another chocolate boy. 11:06 and our 3rd chocolate boy was born. Laia and I got a bit of break, she got her vanilla ice cream. Our next puppy was born at 11:58 our little apricot girl.
Things slowed down after that as Laia decided to take a nap until 1 AM when another chocolate boy was born! Wow on the chocolate boys! The next puppy was even longer to wait for and was born at 2:42 AM. Right when the puppy was born Laia had grabbed the placenta and pulled almost a sling, and pulled the umbilical cord too hard. It happened so quickly and I was worried it was too short, so I quickly scooped her out of the way so I could see. She had pulled the cord out completely and broke the intestinal wall as I could see some intestines that had come out. I gently pushed them back in, wrapped the puppy up tight in a towel, and called the emergency vet who said to bring the puppy in. I dragged my husband out of bed as I headed to the vet. I knew I had one puppy left to be born. The emergency vet is 40 minutes away and I packed her up in a puppy bin that I had ready but was the first time I had used it.
We got to the vet and I was filling out the paperwork and told them I didn't even know the gender of the puppy as I just wrapped it up right away. They whisked the puppy off to the back. I was quite fretful but soon they came back out and said the puppy was just fine, doing great, and it was a little girl! The spot was very tiny and they cleaned it up and put in some dis solvable stitches, gave her a shot of antibiotics and sent some oral antibiotics home. I whisked her back home as I knew she had not eaten yet, the vet reassured me that this would be just fine. We got back home just after 5 AM, where I handed her off to my husband to put with Laia asked how she was doing and if the last puppy was born as I raced back out to change my clothes.
He said Laia had been resting quietly and no new puppy. I got the little girl to latch on and made sure she got a good meal! After that we just went into wait mode, Laia was not in distress and was resting quietly so I was not overly alarmed. By 8:30 AM, a puppy sac broke and I figured not too long, but it was on and off pushes for a couple more hours. I even took her out for a potty break and a quick walk to get things moving. The puppy was hanging really low in her tummy and by 11:30 AM I was getting concerned but Laia was still not distressed. At 11:45 I saw the tail, and thought this is how I started, a few more good pushes and the puppy was born. I was surprised to see the puppy completely wrapped up in a sac except for the tail. As I helped Laia clean the puppy off I realized the puppy was wrapped quite tightly in not just one sac but 3 sacs. As I undid them I knew something was wrong as the puppy was not moving or breathing. I quickly took up the puppy and started doing the resuscitation techniques I had learned. I noticed the puppy's paws, lips, and tongue were a white gray color and not the usual pink. I called the vet and talked it over with them and we guessed the puppy had been still born. I still worked on the puppy for almost half hour before I called it quits. I asked the vet if I should have brought her in sooner but they said that was a hard call to make as Laia was not in distress and no signs there was anything wrong, they felt that the puppy had been still born while she carrying it.
The last puppy was another chocolate boy. I figured there was an angel in heaven who needed a little Labradoodle puppy.
Wow what a night, what a day.
We still have 8 beautiful puppies! 7 chocolates and 1 apricot, Laia going against the stats of half and half. 4 boys and 4 girls. The one apricot being a little girl.
